"Friends Again" - A Musical Analysis
Growing up, music played a big role in my household. It's no surprise that even through adulthood, it has continued to play a big role in my life. When it comes to music and me, one true thing is I gravitate towards R&B/Soul. So it is no revelation that for this musical analysis, I have chosen to stick to R&B with the song "Friends Again".
This song resonates with me because of the smooth, sultry voice of Baby Rose and how it harmonizes with the voice of Leon Thomas. Together, they create a feeling combined with visuals that pulls you in and keeps you there.
Musical Elements
1. Vocals/Melody
Dual vocals: The song features a duet structure where Baby Rose and Leon Thomas each take turns expressing different sides of the emotional story. Their voices contrast and intertwine, which creates drama and depth in the melody. The delivery is expressive and raw, leaning into the emotional tension in the lyrics.
- Rich phrasing: Baby Rose’s baritone vocal style brings warmth and vulnerability, while Thomas brings smoother R&B injections, both adding character to the melody.
2. Harmony/Instrumentation
- Warm chord progressions: The harmony sits in a soulful R&B space, often using extended, jazzy chords that give richness to the track.Live-feeling instrumentation: The production emphasizes a live band vibe using instruments like piano or electric keys, soft bass, and conventional drums rather than purely electronic beats. This contributes to an organic, intimate feel.
3. Rhythm/Production
- The rhythm is relaxed and steady, typical of a lot of R&B songs. For this song specifically, the rhythm supports the introspective feel of the lyrics
- The production focuses on clarity and layering textures enough to support the vocals without overcrowding them. This lets the emotion in the performances take center stage.
Emotionally, the warmth of the production and the back and forth between Baby Rose and Leon Thomas makes the song feel like a private conversation, almost as if the audience is witnessing two people work through unresolved feelings in real time. The rich, soulful harmonies create a sense of comfort, while the lyrics introduce tension and uncertainty, which adds emotional depth. By avoiding being overenergetic, the vulnerability in their voices takes center stage. The production is smooth and not overcrowded, allowing the sincerity of the performances to stand out, making the song feel heartfelt and reflective rather than dramatic or overcrowded.

I’m currently adding this to my playlist, gorgeous song! I only heard the first 30 seconds and fell in love with Baby Rose’s voice, and I already love Leon Thomas. I’m always looking for new artists who have a unique voice, and Baby Rose definitely has one. Although Baby Rose is a completely different genre, her voice gives me similar vibes to Celia Cruz, aka the “Queen of Salsa”. Her most iconic song is probably "Oye Como Va". If you like Latin music at all, it’s a fun and catchy song to listen to. I just think it’s really powerful when a female artist can command a room by reaching such low ranges effortlessly and flawlessly, like Baby Rose and Celia Cruz.
